“What will people say?”
If you grew up in India, you’ve probably heard this sentence more times than you can count.
Don’t wear that.
Don’t start that business.
Don’t make videos.
Don’t dance.
Don’t speak too loudly.
Don’t fail.
Because…
“Log kya kahenge?”
(What will people say?)
But here’s something funny.
Who exactly are these “people”?
For years, I believed they were everywhere.
Watching.
Judging.
Waiting for me to make a mistake.
Then one day, I realized something hilarious.
Those “four people” were probably busy worrying about what their four people thought about them.
Let’s imagine them.
Person 1.
Worried about gaining weight.
Person 2.
Stressed because their relatives compare them with cousins.
Person 3.
Trying to pay EMIs.
Person 4.
Wondering why nobody likes their Instagram post.
Do you know what none of them are doing?
Thinking about you.
Most people are too busy living inside their own heads.
They’re thinking about:
Not yours.
Psychologists even have a name for this tendency: we often overestimate how much other people notice and judge us. In reality, most people are focused on themselves much more than we realize.
There was a time when I was afraid to post videos online.
“What if people laugh?”
“What if I make mistakes?”
“What if someone from my village sees this?”
“What if relatives talk?”
Then I asked myself a simple question.
Have I ever spent hours thinking about someone else’s small mistake?
Honestly…
No.
I notice it.
Smile.
And move on.
So why did I believe everyone else would do something different?
Imagine reaching 70 years old.
Looking back.
And realizing you never started the business.
Never traveled.
Never expressed yourself.
Never chased your dreams.
All because of four imaginary people.
That’s a very expensive price to pay for someone else’s opinion.
Here’s the biggest plot twist.
Those famous four people…
…are probably sitting somewhere worrying about what you think of them.
Everyone is trapped in the same cycle.
Everyone wants acceptance.
Everyone wants to belong.
Everyone fears judgment.
The prison exists mostly inside our minds.
Wear what you like.
Start the YouTube channel.
Post the reel.
Apply for the job.
Learn the new skill.
Start the business.
Smile a little more.
Because life isn’t an audition.
It’s your story.
Remember those four people?
I have some breaking news.
There were only two.
And they were arguing with each other.
😄
If you’re constantly waiting for everyone’s approval, you’ll spend your life living someone else’s version of success.
The truth is simple:
People will always have opinions.
Some will support you.
Some won’t.
But none of them will live with the consequences of your choices.
You will.
So stop asking for permission from imaginary judges.
Start living for the person you’ll see in the mirror every morning.
“The day you stop living for imaginary people is the day you start living for yourself.”
